Diagnosis and control

The research projects are focused on diseases and pests in the crops implanted in the Basque Country, including greenhouse crops and extensive and forest crops. Currently, the focus of attention in this line is on: peppers and tomatoes in the greenhouse, cereals (wheat, barley and oats), seed potatoes and for consumption, sugar beets, vines and apples. Diseases and pests are dealt with from the aetiology and taxonomy of the causal agents, fine tuning of the diagnosis and detection methods and description of the control strategies for both conventional (integrated pest management) and agro-ecological management. It is specifically worth mentioning the development of research projects in the area of food safety, which address approaches to problems related to plant protection and mycotoxins.
The department of plant health keeps the specialist diagnostic and epidemiological surveillance service open to consultations for the work of diagnosing and detecting pests and diseases, as well as the transfer service of alerts and warnings as a tool to support decision-making by the technical advisers linked to farms.
